Wedding Judgment: Why it Needs to Stop

A wedding essentially invites guests to delve into the love story of you and your partner. It is the sharing of a journey that is deeply personal; therefore, opening your hearts up can be somewhat of a nerve wracking experience.

Behind the glitz and glam of an event is plenty of behind-the-scenes effort consisting of planning, organising, budgeting and even sleepless nights. The months, weeks and days leading up to the big day can evoke nervous butterflies in one’s stomach, but most importantly, excitement.

After all this, you can imagine how disheartening it can be for a couple if they find out that judgment has been passed about the way they have chosen to hold their event. Perhaps you’ve witnessed it occur in movies, or even in real life: the uttering of unkind comments that pick apart the decisions that the newlyweds so excitedly made. It is enough to put a solemn damper on what is meant to be the greatest night of newlywed’s lives.

We encourage lifting each other up, not tearing each other down. It is important to recognise that we are all different, and therefore, the preferences we may have for menus, styling and music is sure to vary vastly from person to person.

One of life’s most sacred pleasures is experiencing and celebrating true love. As a guest, we encourage you to fully immerse yourself into the night and show the newlyweds how much you care. Don’t be afraid to head to the dance floor and have a boogie- we can confirm that no one leaves the dance floor without a giant grin on their face! Especially if they have just shown off their stellar moves.

It is also important to respect the wishes of the couple on the day. For example, if they have decided that they would like their ceremony to be “unplugged,” it just means that they would like to relish the present moment. Even if you may not understand, or wouldn’t necessarily make this choice yourself, it is courteous to respect the couple’s wishes. Remember, it is just because they love you and want to be wholly present with everyone- after all, it is a once-in-a-lifetime moment that they never want to forget!

Most importantly, never underestimate how meaningful your love and support can be throughout the planning phase of a huge event like a wedding. A simple message, smile or hug can make a world of difference to someone’s experience.

It’s nice to be important, but it’s more important to be nice.
