Overseas Family – How Can I Include Them In My Wedding?

The Covid19 Pandemic of 2020 has resulted in many, many wedding plans having to be adjusted. For some the changes have been minor, for some they’ve been drastic, and for some, they’re still figuring out exactly what the changes will be.

One thing that has impacted many people though, is the fact that travel has virtually ceased worldwide. This has meant sadly that a lot of overseas family and friends will be unable to attend weddings and other special events that they previously would have been able to. And unfortunately it’s also possible that even if restrictions lessen, travel is probably going to be one of the last things to go back to normal, so even if you’ve postponed your wedding, the new date might not fall within new available travel dates.

So how do you make sure that they can still be a apart of your big day, without having to reschedule your wedding again?

The answer is simple: live streaming. Allow your guests to watch your wedding from their own home, wherever they are, so they don’t miss any of the action.

Sounds like the perfect solution, doesn’t it? So, how does it work? Well we’ve put together all the information you need so you can decide if you want to include this for your special day.

What is live streaming?

In a nutshell, live streaming is broadcasting your wedding over the internet so people can follow the action from anywhere in the world. Your friends and relatives are simply given a website link to click on the big day and this allows them to watch the celebrations as they unfold.

What do you need to be able to do it?

You need a high definition camera, lapel microphones, and a 3G/4G connection to the internet at a minimum. You’ll want to make sure that you test the internet connection at your venue beforehand. WiFi has gotten better over the years for live streaming, but a camera that can be connected to a laptop and a wired internet connection can work even better. Also, many churches also now have live-stream capabilities. Ask if there is an extra fee to stream your ceremony if it is in a church. A professional will be able to troubleshoot any problems on the day, so we highly recommend using one to ensure that there aren’t any technical difficulties. Many videographers will be able to organise the live streaming for you, so when choosing one for your day, make sure you ask them about this aspect as well.

How does it work?

Basically, a high-definition video camera and a series of microphone feeds are hooked up to the internet to create a live stream of action. This is done through the 3G/4G mobile data network. The live stream is hooked up to the primary camera, which means viewers at home shadow the videographer as he/she roams. They see the same special moments they do, such as outside the church when the bride arrives, the vow exchange and beyond. Wherever the camera operator goes, the stream goes with him. It’s the next best thing to actually being there.

Can you live stream any and all weddings, or just those in a church or other building with existing power supply?

Because you only need a high-speed internet connection or 3G/4G data coverage, live streaming isn’t just restricted to inside buildings. However, it is important to remember and consider that using a hard-wired internet connection and an existing power supply CAN reduce the possibility of hiccups.

What about security and privacy?

Password protection is available to couples who want to keep their day private. A website link is set up prior to the day and sent via email to the future bride and groom. They can then share the link as broadly, or as narrowly, as they would like.

Do live streams stay online after the event?

The broadcast only lasts for the length of the event or ceremony, but it then remains on the link afterwards so people can tune in when it suits them. It is available for immediate playback afterwards (like a DVR player) and includes such features as fast forward and rewind so your guests can find and focus on their favourite bits.

Can they be saved and/or downloaded?

Live streams can be downloaded. Just check with your videographer for what their packages include.

So there you have it. There is no need to stress about your loved ones from afar, because they can still witness your “I dos”. No pandemic is a match for true love (and modern technology)!
